Epidural Lysis of Adhesions

Epidural Lysis of Adhesions is a procedure performed to remove excessive scarring in the epidural space.

Epidural Lysis of Adhesions is due to scar tissue that may restrict the natural movement of nerves causing inflammation and pain. Patients who have had prior neck or back surgery but still have persistent pain may benefit from this procedure along with patients who have herniated disks. The Epidural is x-ray (fluoroscope) guided, a contrast dye is injected to locate the scared area, and a catheter is used to inject a special medication to help break-up the scarring as well as to mechanically break-up the scared tissue. Finally, a mixture of steroids and local anesthetics will be injected to decreased the inflammation and provide pain relief after the break-up of adhesions.
