Shin Splints

What are Shin Splints?

Shin Splints are the common term for pain in the front of your lower leg along your tibia, commonly known as the “shinbone.” This pain may be from a stress fracture of the bone or micro-tears in the muscles. Common complaints are pain on the inside or front of the lower leg, pain after running especially on hard surfaces, or up and down hills. Increased pain with activity, or aching in the shins after activity.

What causes Shin Splints?

The most common cause of shin splints is repetitive stress on the bones of the lower leg. This is common in people who run a lot especially on hard surfaces, which increase stress on the muscles, bones, and joints. Trauma to the muscles or bone may cause them also. Running with worn-out or improper shoes which may cause the foot to turn inward (Pronation) may be the cause. Tight muscles may also be to blame for this condition.
