Using Gratson Technique for soft tissue ailments By: Mike McLarnon D.C.

Graston Technique is a form of manual therapy known as instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM). Graston Technique instruments are made of stainless steel which are specifically designed and developed as an alternative to manual transverse friction massage. These instruments help aid in diagnosis and treatment of soft tissue pathology and dysfunction by providing diagnostic tactile feedback to both the clinician and the patient.

When we have an injury whether it is from repetitive use or trauma our body attempts to heal those areas by creating “scar tissue” or adhesions much like the scar that forms on the skin when injured. As time progresses there can be a buildup of this fibrotic scar tissue in the soft tissues which leads to decreased function and pain because of the poor quality and lack of strength of the scar tissue as compared to healthy tissues. Once these areas of scar tissue are treated with the Graston Technique and your body absorbs it pain will be reduced and function restored. By further incorporating stretching, strengthening, ice, and rehabilitation your body will rebuild the soft tissue injury into healthy functioning tissue.

Graston Technique is clinically proven to achieve quicker and better outcomes in treating soft tissue ailments such as tendonitis/tendonosis, rotator cuff syndromes, shin splints, neck pain, back pain, and plantar fasciitis to name a few. Treatments speed up recovery and rehabilitation time, reduces the need for anti-inflammatory medications, and helps patients get back to everyday activities in a relatively short time. Historically, the Graston Technique has had positive outcomes in 75-90 percent of all conditions treated.
